Arc Suppression Coils — Petersen Coil for Neutral Grounding
Arc suppression coils (Petersen coils) provide resonant neutral grounding for medium-voltage distribution networks, automatically compensating the capacitive fault current so an earth fault arc self-extinguishes. Tuning-type or tap-adjustable designs rated 6–35 kV, used with a zig-zag (Z-type) grounding transformer to form a complete neutral grounding system for overhead and cable networks.
Applications
Overhead and cable distribution networks
Industrial medium-voltage systems
Renewable plant collector systems
Substation neutral grounding
Key Features
- Resonant (Petersen) neutral grounding for earth-fault arc suppression
- Tuning-type and tap-adjustable (graded) designs
- 6–35 kV class for medium-voltage distribution networks
- Works with zig-zag (Z-type) grounding transformers
- Automatic or manual tuning control options
- Reduces earth fault current to safe self-extinguishing levels
Selection Guide
Network capacitance
Measure system capacitive current to size the coil compensation range.
Neutral point
Add a zig-zag grounding transformer if no neutral is available.
Control
Choose automatic tuning for large networks, manual/tap for smaller systems.
- Frequently Asked Questions
What is an arc suppression coil (Petersen coil)?
A Petersen coil is an adjustable inductance connected between the system neutral and earth, tuned to resonate with the network capacitance so single-phase earth fault current is reduced to a level that allows the arc to self-extinguish.
Why is a grounding transformer needed?
When the network has no accessible neutral (delta-connected), a zig-zag (Z-type) grounding transformer provides the artificial neutral point for the coil.
Tuning or tap type?
Tuning-type adjusts reactance continuously for precise resonance; tap-type switches steps of reactance, simpler and lower cost.
