Where QDTB® Busway Systems Are Specified

Busway is specified where a high current has to travel a long way through a building or a plant without a bundle of parallel cables: the feeder from a transformer to the main switchboard, the riser in a high-rise, and the overhead distribution in a data hall. The busbar replaces cable with a factory-built, low-impedance conductor that is faster to install and easier to extend.

Data centres and server halls choose dense busway because the tap-off units can be added or moved without rewiring the hall, which is what allows a row of racks to be re-laid out between equipment generations. Industrial plants use the same system for long feeder runs where a cable bundle would need a large tray and a grouping derating.

Fire-resistant busway is specified on life-safety circuits and evacuation routes, where the circuit has to keep working while the building is being evacuated. That duty is set by the fire-rated enclosure rather than by the conductor, so it is selected against the fire strategy and not against the load alone.

Systems are rated 250-6300 A at 380/400/690 V with copper or aluminium conductors, to IEC 61439-6. High-voltage enclosed busbar is available to IEC 62271-200 practice where the run leaves the low-voltage board.
