Frequently asked questions
How do I convert kVA to kW?
kW = kVA x Power Factor. A 500 kVA Transformer at 0.8 pf delivers 400 kW. The reverse is kVA = kW / pf. Without knowing the power factor you cannot convert exactly — the calculator applies your pf to convert apparent and real power.
How do I convert AWG to mm2?
AWG and mm2 are both conductor cross-section measures. Common equivalences: 10 AWG = 5.26 mm2, 8 AWG = 8.37 mm2, 6 AWG = 13.3 mm2, 4 AWG = 21.2 mm2, 2 AWG = 33.6 mm2, and 0 AWG = 53.5 mm2. The calculator converts both ways for cable sizing.
What temperature scale do transformer ratings use?
Transformer Temperature Rise is specified in Kelvin or degrees Celsius (identical step size); ambient reference is usually 40 deg C, with Class F insulation rated 155 deg C and Class H 180 deg C. The calculator converts Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin for thermal checks.
How do I convert torque units for motor specifications?
Motor torque units: Nm, kgfm, lb-ft. 1 Nm = 0.10197 kgfm = 0.7376 lb-ft. A 1000 Nm motor is about 102 kgfm or 738 lb-ft. The calculator converts torque and other common electrical units (power, length, frequency) in one place.
What is the difference between kW, kVA and kvar?
kW is real (useful) power, kvar is reactive power, and kVA is apparent power (their vector sum): kVA^2 = kW^2 + kvar^2. Power factor = kW/kVA. A 100 kW load at 0.8 pf draws 125 kVA and 75 kvar. The calculator converts among them.
