Current Limiting Reactors — NKL Cement / FKL Split Reactors

Current limiting reactors limit short-circuit current in power systems to protect switchgear and reduce fault stress. The NKL cement-type (concrete) reactor and FKL split reactor are air-core, dry-type units rated 6–35 kV with 4–12% reactance, designed for substations, generator circuits, and capacitor bank inrush limiting.

Applications

1

Substation short-circuit current limitation

2

Generator and motor feeder protection

3

Capacitor bank inrush limiting

4

Industrial plants with high fault levels

Key Features

  • Air-core dry-type construction with cement (NKL) or split (FKL) winding
  • Limits short-circuit current to protect downstream switchgear
  • 6–35 kV class with 4–12% reactance ratings
  • Low loss and high linearity over the current range
  • Split reactor (FKL) couples two sections for mutual benefit
  • Custom reactance and current ratings available

Selection Guide

1

Reactance

Calculate the required % reactance to bring fault current within breaker rating.

2

Type

Choose NKL cement for single circuits or FKL split for two coupled circuits.

3

Voltage

Match the 6–35 kV system voltage and continuous current rating.

- Frequently Asked Questions

What is a current limiting reactor?

A current limiting reactor is an air-core inductive device inserted in series to reduce the prospective short-circuit current, protecting circuit breakers and equipment from excessive fault stress.

What is the difference between NKL and FKL?

NKL is a cement (concrete) insulated single reactor; FKL is a split reactor whose two halves are magnetically coupled, used where two circuits can share the current-limiting function.

How is reactance expressed?

As a percentage of the base impedance (commonly 4–12%), which determines the fault-current reduction for the system.
