How It Works

A surge protective device clamps the voltage spike from a lightning strike or switching event before it reaches the inverter. A Type 2 SPD uses metal-oxide varistors that become conductive above a threshold, shunting the surge to earth and clamping the voltage to a safe level. Fitting SPDs at both the array combiner and the inverter protects the most surge-sensitive part of the plant.

Structure & Composition

The SPD houses metal-oxide varistor modules on a DIN-rail body with pluggable cartridges for quick replacement. A visual status window shows whether the varistors are intact, and thermal disconnectors isolate a failed module from the circuit. Units are rated by nominal and maximum discharge current (In and Imax) for the installation's exposure level.

Selection Guide

  • Install Type 2 SPDs at the array combiner and at the inverter DC input, plus AC-side SPDs at the grid connection.
  • Choose the discharge rating (In/Imax) according to the site's lightning exposure level.
  • Select the SPD's maximum continuous voltage to match the system's DC voltage (600, 1000 or 1500 V).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Type 1 or Type 2 SPD?

Type 1 handles direct lightning at the service entrance; Type 2 clamps induced surges at distribution points such as the array and inverter.

Q

Where should the SPD go?

At the DC combiner, at the inverter DC input, and on the AC side at the grid connection for full protection.

Q

How do I know the SPD is still working?

The visual status window shows whether the varistors are intact; pluggable cartridges make replacement quick.
