How It Works

A protection relay is the safety gatekeeper for grid connection. It continuously monitors voltage and frequency and trips the plant off-grid the instant a parameter leaves its configured window — under/over-voltage, under/over-frequency, or an islanding condition. Utilities require a certified relay before any generator, including a PV plant, may connect to their network.

Structure & Composition

The relay samples the grid voltage and frequency through instrument transformers, compares them against configurable trip settings, and drives a trip output to the main breaker. It includes an islanding detection algorithm and a local display for setting and status, with Modbus communication for remote supervision of the trip state.

Selection Guide

  • Required for every grid-connected plant — choose a relay certified for the target utility's grid code.
  • Configure the voltage and frequency trip windows to the utility's interconnection requirements.
  • Integrate the trip output with the main breaker so a fault isolates the plant immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Why is a protection relay mandatory?

Utilities require certified under/over-voltage, under/over-frequency and islanding protection before a plant may connect to the grid.

Q

What is islanding protection?

The relay detects when the plant is unintentionally energising a dead grid section and trips to prevent back-feeding.

Q

Can the trip settings be adjusted?

Yes — the voltage and frequency windows are configurable to match the utility's grid code.
