How It Works

SCADA is the supervisory layer that turns raw plant data into control. It collects telemetry from every device, presents it to operators on real-time dashboards, raises alarms on threshold violations and dispatches commands to PV, storage and loads. For an energy management system, SCADA is where self-consumption, demand-charge and dispatch strategies are actually executed.

Structure & Composition

The SCADA system spans field devices, communication gateways, a supervisory server and operator workstations. The server runs the historian database, alarm engine and HMI, while gateways provide the field connectivity. IEC 61850 and Modbus interfaces tie the plant into utility dispatch and third-party energy management platforms.

Selection Guide

  • Choose full SCADA for multi-site fleets, microgrids and plants under utility dispatch.
  • Confirm IEC 61850 or Modbus support for utility or third-party integration.
  • Specify the alarm, trending and reporting functions the operator actually needs before sizing the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q

Gateway or SCADA?

A gateway concentrates device data; SCADA adds supervisory control, alarms, trending and operator interfaces on top.

Q

What protocols does SCADA speak?

Modbus TCP/RTU, MQTT, IEC 61850 and REST, covering most inverter, meter and utility systems.

Q

Can SCADA coordinate storage and PV?

Yes — the energy management layer dispatches PV, storage and loads to optimise self-consumption and demand charges.
