CE Certification for Power Transformers — European Export Handbook

CE (Conformité Européenne) certification is mandatory for all electrical equipment — including power transformers — sold and installed within the European Economic Area (EEA), comprising 27 EU member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. Without CE certification, products cannot be legally placed on the European market regardless of technical quality.

Note: Transformers >1000V AC fall outside LVD scope but must meet general safety per the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC.

2. Conformity Assessment Routes

LV transformers (≤1000V): Module A (internal control) per LVD. Most European buyers require third-party (Notified Body) certification.

MV/HV transformers (>1000V): Not within LVD scope. Market practice requires Notified Body or ILAC-accredited lab certification.

Ecodesign (2019/1783): Mandatory Module A. Manufacturer tests and documents compliance with maximum loss limits per EN 50588.

4. Testing Items

  1. Dielectric testing: Insulation resistance, AC withstand, lightning impulse (full + chopped wave)
  2. Loss and impedance: No-load loss, load loss, impedance, turns ratio — must meet EN 50588
  3. Temperature rise: Confirm winding/oil temperatures within limits
  4. EMC testing: Conducted/radiated emissions, immunity (ESD, surge, EFT)
  5. Mechanical/environmental: Vibration, temperature cycling, humidity, IP rating
  6. Noise measurement: Per IEC 60076-10
  7. RoHS analysis: Lead <0.1%, mercury <0.1%, cadmium <0.01%

Retain for 10 years from last production date:
