SVC Static Var Compensator — Thyristor-Controlled, 10 kV / 35 kV

The SVC (Static Var Compensator) combines thyristor-controlled reactors (TCR) with fixed or mechanically-switched capacitor banks to provide continuous reactive power compensation. Rated up to ±15 Mvar at 10 kV or 35 kV, it stabilizes system voltage and improves power factor in utility substations and heavy industrial networks, with thyristor phase-angle control for fast, reliable output adjustment.

- Frequently Asked Questions

How does an SVC differ from a fixed capacitor bank?

A fixed capacitor bank supplies a constant reactive power, which can over-compensate at light load. An SVC adjusts output continuously through thyristor-controlled reactors, holding power factor and voltage at target under varying load.

Can SVC be used with harmonic-producing loads?

Yes. SVC installations are typically designed with detuned or tuned harmonic filters so the TCR switching does not excite resonance and existing harmonic distortion is contained.
