SVG Static Var Generator — ±1–15 Mvar, 10 kV / 35 kV

The SVG (Static Var Generator) uses voltage-source IGBT inverters to inject or absorb reactive power continuously and dynamically. Rated ±1–15 Mvar at 10 kV or 35 kV with a response time under 5 ms, it corrects power factor, suppresses voltage fluctuation and mitigates three-phase unbalance caused by fluctuating loads such as electric arc furnaces, welding machines and motor drives.

Key Features

IGBT voltage-source converter with <5 ms dynamic response

Rated ±1–15 Mvar at 10 kV or 35 kV

Continuous stepless reactive power output (no capacitor switching steps)

Corrects power factor and suppresses voltage fluctuation / flicker

Mitigates three-phase unbalance and reduces line losses

Modular power modules with N+1 redundancy for high availability

Applications

  • Steel mills and electric arc furnace (EAF) feeders
  • Wind and solar plant grid-interconnection points
  • Industrial parks with heavy motor and VFD loads
  • Urban and utility substations with fluctuating load
  • Railway traction power supply systems

- Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SVG and SVC?

SVG uses IGBT power-electronics inverters for stepless, millisecond-level reactive compensation, while SVC uses thyristor-switched or controlled reactors and capacitors. SVG responds faster, generates less harmonic by-product and has a smaller footprint, whereas SVC is a mature, cost-effective choice for very large ratings.

What is the response time of a static var generator?

SVG systems respond within about 5 ms, allowing them to follow rapidly fluctuating reactive loads such as electric arc furnaces and welding machines.

Which voltage levels are available?

SVG and SVC systems are commonly supplied for 10 kV and 35 kV distribution networks, with lower-voltage (400/690 V) variants for industrial installations.
