No-Load Loss

Performance Parameters

Power consumed when energized but not supplying load, consisting of core losses (hysteresis + eddy currents).

No-load loss (core loss) is power consumed at rated voltage/frequency with secondary open. Consists of hysteresis and eddy current loss, plus small excitation I2R.

Constant regardless of load. Over 30-40 years energized 24/7, represents significant cost. 1,000 kVA with 1.5 kW = 13,140 kWh/year loss.

Modern designs achieve 40-70% lower through premium steel, step-lap construction, amorphous core technology.
