An amorphous alloy transformer uses a core made from metallic glass ribbons instead of traditional grain-oriented silicon steel. The amorphous metal's random atomic structure dramatically reduces hysteresis loss and eddy current loss—resulting in 60-70% lower no-load losses than conventional distribution transformers.
Since distribution transformers remain energized 24/7 over 30-40 years, the no-load loss reduction translates to enormous savings. A typical 500 kVA amorphous transformer saves 3,000-5,000 kWh annually. Preferred for utilities targeting IE4 efficiency class or better.
Amorphous transformers benefit urban infrastructure and industrial networks where load factors are below 50%.
