Relay Protection (Transformer)
Protective relay schemes detecting transformer internal and external faults, initiating circuit breaker tripping to isolate faults.
Transformer relay protection employs multiple protective elements to detect and isolate faults. Primary protection: differential relay (internal winding faults comparing incoming vs outgoing CT currents), Buchholz relay (gas detection), sudden pressure relay.
Backup protection: overcurrent (phase faults), earth fault (ground faults), overfluxing, thermal overload (temperature monitoring).
Modern: numerical relays with IEC 61850 communication, recording, and self-diagnostics. Must coordinate with HV and LV protection.
