An arc furnace transformer is a specialized power transformer designed to supply the extremely high currents and variable voltages required by electric arc furnaces (EAF) in steelmaking. These transformers withstand severe conditions including frequent short circuits, extreme current fluctuations, and intense harmonic distortion.
They typically feature very high secondary currents (up to 100,000+ A), robust mechanical construction, and on-load tap changers for precise voltage control during melting. They often include reactor functions to stabilize the arc.
Key design considerations include high impedance to limit fault currents, strong mechanical bracing, and enhanced cooling for extreme thermal cycling.
