Harmonics
Integer multiples of fundamental frequency from non-linear loads, causing increased transformer losses and overheating.
Harmonics are voltage/current components at multiples of fundamental frequency. Generated by VFDs, rectifiers, switched-mode supplies, arc furnaces, renewable inverters.
Problems in transformers: increased eddy current losses (increase with f squared), additional core losses, noise, resonance. The K-factor system defines harmonic handling capability.
Severe environments require derating or special design: reduced flux, electrostatic shields, 200% neutral capacity. Our K-factor guide provides sizing methodology.
