Step-Up/Step-Down Transformer
Transformers increasing (step-up) or decreasing (step-down) voltage levels based on the turns ratio.
Step-up has more secondary turns (generation to transmission). Step-down has fewer (transmission to utilization). Ratio equals turns ratio (V2/V1 = N2/N1).
Step-up at generation (11-25 kV to 110-765 kV) for efficient long-distance transfer. Step-down at every level: transmission to sub-transmission, distribution to utilization.
Many can operate in either direction—relevant for distributed generation.
