Quad Booster (Regulating Transformer)

Special Transformers

A regulating transformer injecting variable voltage in series with a transmission line for precise voltage and power flow control.

A quad booster (regulating transformer) comprises an exciter (shunt) unit and a series boosting unit, injecting a variable voltage in quadrature with the line voltage. Used for precise voltage regulation and power flow control in transmission networks.

Applications: controlling power flow on parallel transmission lines, interconnecting grids at different voltage levels, compensating for long-line voltage drops. Provides independent control of voltage magnitude and phase angle.

Comprises two separate cores: shunt unit connected across the line providing excitation; series unit injecting controlled voltage. Often equipped with on-load tap changers for continuous adjustment.
