Watt Loss
The total real power loss in a transformer in watts, comprising no-load and load loss components.
Watt loss is total real power dissipated as heat: no-load loss (P0, core loss—constant) + load loss (Pk, copper loss—proportional to load squared).
Total: Ptotal = P0 + Pk x (Load%)^2. Efficiency = Output/(Output + Ptotal) x 100%. Directly determines: operating cost, cooling requirements, CO2 emissions, total owning cost.
Modern designs: 30-50% lower than 20 years ago. Amorphous offers lowest no-load losses.
