Load Tap Changer (LTC)
A mechanism allowing transformer tap ratio changes while energized and under load for real-time voltage regulation.
A Load Tap Changer adjusts the turns ratio while energized and carrying load, enabling real-time voltage regulation without interruption.
Uses transition resistors/reactors to prevent short-circuiting between taps. Modern LTCs operate in 3-10 seconds/step, rated for 300,000+ operations. Essential for substation regulation and parallel load sharing.
